Today We Need Angels

Today We Need Angels

Today we need the angels,

messengers of God,

who are not confined

to a season or a place

to a method or form.

Those who reconnect us to your love and hope for this world.

We need the songs which angels sing

which cut through

the babble

the debate

the endless words

the loudspeaker carols,

And remind us that

In the beginning was the Word

and the Word was with you

and the Word was you.

We long for that Word to be sung, spoken, and lived again.

We need the perspective which angels give

for we see with downcast eyes with dimmed vision;

we take ourselves so seriously and others not seriously enough

we use arrogance to cover up our insufficiencies

and hostility to protect us from judgment.

Lift us up and show us what we haven’t grasped.

We need the grace which angels offer

as they remind us again

that you break into time in miraculous ways

and turn our tight agendas upside down,

that you use and even choose the darkest moments

to convey your nearness,

that you love us and free us all the time,

but it is often when we least deserve love

that we discover it.

May we be still enough to hear the rustle of wings.

Amen

  1. A lovely, grace-laced prayer and reflection. I have tried to be still myself so as to hear the rustle of angel wings – a reminder that God is with us….
